Acne
Definition and Description: Acne is an inflammatory disease involving the hair follicles and sebaceous glands of the skin characterized by papules or pustules also known as comedones or simply plugs . This common skin condition (especially in young adults) is marked by the eruption of pimples, sometimes painful, on the surface of the skin. This inflammatory condition also affects the arms, back and chest.
Acne is characterized by black heads, pimple outbreaks, cysts, infected abscesses, and sometimes scarring. The places in your body most susceptible to acne are locations with the most oil glands such as the face and forehead.
Types
Inflammatory – Closed papules that have become red, irritated and severely inflamed. In some cases rupture can occur underneath the surface of the skin causing scarring.
Non-Inflammatory – Oil trapped underneath the surface of the skin forming the so called white-heads or blackheads.
Key Factors
Bacterial
Propionibacterium acnes is the normal bacteria that resides on the surface of the skin. It functions to protect your skin from harmful foreign bacteria. When these bacteria grow inside the oil trapped in a hair follicle the result is the transformation of the oil by the bacteria’s chemical processes. This alteration causes irritation and inflammation on the surface of the skin. This inflammation is the body’s way of trying to eliminate the irritating compounds produced by the bacteria.
Hormonal
Androgens are the hormones that are primarily responsible for the stimulation and secretion of sebum or oil underneath the surface of the skin. During puberty there is a significant increase of androgens which can cause blockages. Hormonal changes affect the oil glands underneath the surface of the skin causing an increased out-put of oils. If the pores become blocked from the collection of skin cells inside a pour then this oil becomes trapped causing all the symptoms of acne. Hormones are greatly affected by diet and will be discussed below.
Emotional
Stress can have a direct effect on the hormones thus contributing to excess sebum production in the oil glands beneath the surface of the skin. This can have a cyclic result because you can develop stress from the way acne affects your appearance.
Beauty Products
Ironically many beauty products and pharmaceutical creams claiming to be helpful in treating acne not only do not work, but they actually make acne worse in many cases. This is because oil based products that are not all natural contain rancid oils and oil compounds mixed with petroleum derived chemicals as preservatives. This causes allergic reactions, build-up of toxins, clogging of pours and other conditions that make acne worse. Check the ingredients of any cream or lotion you may be using; if it filled with chemicals you cannot pronounce throw it out.

Diet
Many companies are now saying that diet has nothing to do with acne and that you can still eat whatever you want and just buy their skin care product or hormone drug. The fact is because hormones are complex combinations of fats and proteins diet plays a huge role in acne. Staying away from processed foods and foods contaminated with toxins is extremely important.
Your skin is the largest eliminative organ of your body and if you are pre-disposed to acne or have a hormonal imbalance then these toxins will clog up your skin pours even more. Therefore, it is vital that you reduce the toxic load on your immune system by cutting out as much processed foods as possible, especially; soda, potato chips, chocolate that is filled with sugar and emulsifiers, as well as packaged foods loaded with corn oils. Proper exercise is a fast way to sweat and clean out the pours of your body and eliminate toxins that build up underneath the skin. Consult a physical therapist that can give you a qualified exercise regimen.
Keep the pours open and able to breathe through gentle scrubbing of the face each day. This prevents oil from drying on the face and clogging pours. Especially avoid touching the face or affected area with your hands, as this introduces more foreign bacteria and possible toxins that block the pours and burden the immune system even further.
Aloe Vera
Aloe is one of the greatest skin healers available to use and is inexpensive and easy to find. Aloe heals and repairs epithelial cells, is highly anti-inflammatory, and the polysaccharides contained in Aloe Vera help the skin to heal itself quickly, especially from some of the scaring effects of acne. To apply the aloe, cut open a thick aloe vera leaf and flay out a piece of gel and place it on the effected area of the skin directly. Remember there are many aloe vera gels on the Market that are completely filled with chemicals and fillers so remember to use the natural leaf. It does not have to be certified organic as aloe vera does not undergo the same type of spraying and chemical treatment as commercial foods do.
Vitamins and Mineralization –
Vitamins and Minerals are important for healthy skin and combating acne. Because the skin is normally the last organ to receive nutrients topical application of minerals is a good idea. There are many vitamins and minerals such as vitamin A, vitamin B complex, vitamin E, zinc, magnesium, selenium and chromium that are vital for your skin health. When taking vitamin A be sure to combine it with vitamin B2.
Vitamin C levels should be high as they help to repair damaged skin cells. Topical vitamin C creams should be avoided, instead find an all natural, non-ascorbic acid source of oral vitamin c and ingest orally. The ideal oral source of vitamin c is a lypo spheric source.
Magnesium oil can be applied via topical sprays that can be used on the affected area and rubbed in.
