Candida albicans is a naturally occurring yeast that is present in everyone. In healthy people, candida is kept under control by a balanced whole foods diet and lifestyle, healthy immune system and a sufficient amount of healthy intestinal bacteria and flora. When the population of "good" bacteria that resides throughout the digestive tract is disrupted, your foundation of health starts to crumble. When someone takes repeated doses of antibiotics, prescription drugs, drinks too much alcohol or uses birth control pills, to name a few culprits, candidiasis, or candida for short, can start to proliferate, spreading to various areas of the body. When this happens, candida mutates into an unhealthy fungus, infecting and colonizing in your body's tissues and organs.
Symptoms of candidiasis can manifest in many different ways, mimicking various disease conditions and negatively impacting your body on all fronts. Surprising or scary as this may be, you probably have candidiasis and don't know it. Telltale signs can range from ongoing yeast infections and an ever-present desire for sugar, to feeling tired for no particular reason and an inability to lose weight, coupled with an overall sense of sluggishness and lack of focus. With the onslaught of chemicals and processed foods in our daily environment, the chances are high that your body is struggling with some degree of candida overgrowth.
